Bath and Wells MAT

English Special Events

Yearly, we are visiting by a professional poet or author to help inspire our children through excellent workshops.  We also celebrate World Book Day, hold our own Book Swap on International Book Giving Day and run other themed days linked to our Gears.

World Book Day 2025:

The whole school use the book 'Speak Up' by Dapo Adeola to drive forward our ideas during World Book Day.  We linked in our Problem Solving and Critical Thinking Gears and used the chance to discuss issues around the world that we should 'Speak Up' about. Classes wrote passionate speeches, wrote blogs, recorded news reports and podcasts.

National Poetry Day 2025:

Class 14 led a worship and read some poems before inviting the children and staff to write their own:

What Teachers Do At Playtime

When it is your playtime,

what do teachers do?

They run to put the kettle on.

They’re desperate for the loo.

You run around and laugh and chat.

Teachers talk about who wrote this and who answered that.

You play great games and act your best.

Teachers snooze and take a rest.

You spend time with your friends.

Teachers moan because playtime ends.

You all line up to come back in.

Teachers throw uneaten  snacks into the bin.

Back to class, pencils out.

‘Playtimes over now, so no need to shout’

You feel sad, you’ve ended your game.

Do you realise teachers feel the same?

Teachers need their break-times too.

They’re just big kids; they’re just like you!
